I actually have no explanation. It’s truly just pure laziness.

We have been spending a lot of time on the Hog-Dog House lately. Mainly because we had a little mishap involving the water line that connects to our fridge. See, back in April sometime after our cruise, Matt decided to finally install the water line that connects to the ice maker on our new fridge (the old fridge didn’t have this – so he actually had to run a new water line from the basement – not just reconnecting). So Matt went to the store, got the kit that the employees recommended, and hooked ‘er up.

[At this point in the story, Matt would like me to point out that when the Sears guy came to install our water softener a few months ago, Matt asked if he could also install the water line. The guy declined and insisted it was very easy and Matt should just do it himself.]

Can you see where this is going??

Side-note: What is with handymen declining all my job offers? Seriously, guys? I will pay you!

About a month later (so, a few weeks ago), we woke up on a Monday morning to a flooded kitchen, which in turn had seeped through the floor and into the basement, thus flooding the basement as well.

Fast forward to almost exactly 4 weeks later, and we are still trying to fix the problem.  But, it certainly could have been worse.   So we have that going for us.

Anyway, thanks for staying with me folks.  I will try to keep up.

First, let’s take a look at the “before” pictures. From the day we moved in.

Have you ever seen that show “Hidden Potential”? Yeah, it was kind of like that.

Now, a “during” picture from a few days after we moved in.

And this is what it’s looked like for the past year and a half. The only thing I purchased at that time was a new duvet cover and curtains. We had our old, mismatched dressers on the other side of the room (sorry, no pictures). And we only have one small closet. Poor Matt has been using the guest room closet on the other side of the house.

But all that has changed.

We decided it was pretty impossible (and unrealistic) to fit all of our clothes into just one closet. So we brainstormed for a while, and I scoured the interwebz. I finally found the perfect solution from one of my favorite bloggers, www.younghouselove.com. Using their master bedroom as inspiration (big props to them because I pretty much stole their idea and their creativeness), we created a pretty cozy master bedroom with more closet space than we could ever need.

First, some building.

And some heavy lifting.

Notice how I am doing all the work here?
Someone has to take the pictures.

Then, some careful wood-working and trips to the attic.

Does anyone see where this is going?  Anyone?

Okay, almost there…

First, this is why we needed to get into the attic.  We needed to create a little wall to get the real “built in” effect.

And by “we”, I mean Matt, because I did nothing of the sort.

And finally, taaaa daaaaaa!

We created some faux-built-in closets and now our 12′ x 13′ bedroom is a little cozy masterpiece.

Check out all that closet space!

And now for a less-exciting, but still better than before “after” picture – here is the other side of the room.

So, the big reveal is complete. I know I built up the anticipation for you a little too much and you are probably thinking, “That’s it?”  But, really, I don’t care.

Actually, I do care.  What do you think, dear readers?

Just for fun, let’s take one more look at the “before” and “after” shots.

Better, no?

Major Master Changes

Matt and I spent our holiday weekend finally furnishing our master bedroom!

It’s not as simple as just buying a dresser or bed though, so you will have to wait to see the final results.  We finished the big stuff this weekend, and I hope to have most of it wrapped up next weekend.

Let me just say that it is big.  Huge.  We even had to sleep in our guest room on Saturday night.  For a small 12’x13′ room with only one closet, we are making some pretty major changes.

And I think you all are going to love it!

Did anyone else do anything exciting over the holidays?  Can home renovations really be called “exciting”?

I finally made some new pillows for fall/winter, now that I have my awesome craft table. I also got some new winter-friendly curtains for the living room. First, check out the before:

And, the after (sorry it’s kind of dark):

Here are the pillows up close:

I ordered the fabric from Etsy Seller Fabric Flair. What do you guys think?

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! We put our Christmas decorations up yesterday, so lots of Christmas-themed posts to come!

Recycling a table

Some of you might remember our old kitchen table. It was a free hand-me-down from my aunt and uncle and worked great for a couple of years. It doesn’t exactly fit in our space now, so it’s been sitting in the basement for the past year.

Side note: This picture was taken the night we moved into our house. My mom brought lasagna so we took a quick dinner break. Notice how we are eating lasagna on white paper plates? Yeah, those plates actually left little hot spots on that table. Apparently we are not the smartest group alive.

Anyway, this table is now seeing new life, after I painted it a few weeks ago! I just sanded it down a bit, primed it with an oil-based primer, topped it with two coats of white paint, and a coat of polyurethane on top for good measure.

Now I have a pretty awesome craft table, and you should expect some pretty awesome crafts in the future.
